At least 18 people died and 312 were injured in traffic accidents during celebrations in Algeria following their World Cup qualifying victory against Egypt, authorities said Friday.
In the most serious single accident following Wednesday's match in Khartoum, which Algeria won 1-0, five people died in the southern district of Ouargla, the civil protection service was quoted as saying in the press.

Former Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan believes Michael Schumacher will replace Jenson Button at the newly-named Mercedes team for next season.
Speculation has mounted that seven-time champion Schumacher, who could not replace the injured Felipe Massa on a short-term deal at Ferrari last season because of a back injury picked up racing motorcycles, could be drafted into the team run by former Benetton and Ferrari colleague Ross Brawn.

Argentine driver Jose Maria Lopez has reportedly signed to race with the USF1 team in 2010.
The 26-year-old former GP2 driver, who has recently been racing in his country's touring car championship, must complete a $8 million sponsorship package but has signed documentation at the team's Charlotte base, the Corsa publication said.
"The agreement with the American team is done," said Carlos Garcia Remohi, an official with the Argentine club.

MOTORISTS in Derbyshire have been urged to check their tyres are roadworthy before going out in heavy rain forecast for this weekend.
The warning came from Derbyshire police after five people were killed on the county's roads last weekend.
Tyres need to have plenty of tread to stop the car slipping on surface water on the roads, Pc Dave Harris, Derbyshire Constabulary's senior forensic collision investigator, said.

Formula One rights holder Bernie Ecclestone has set the Silverstone circuit a December deadline to keep next year's British Grand Prix on the calendar.
The next meeting of the governing FIA's world motorsport council is on 11 December, when the final schedule will be published.

Six Grimaldi Team Malta drivers returned to Malta earlier this week with more silverware after another successful weekend of racing in the final round of the Campionato Siciliano di Velocita in Circuito held at Racalmuto.

Jose Maria Lopez has revealed that he will race for US F1 next season if he can secure the rest of his sponsorship package.
The Argentine driver visited US F1's Charlotte headquarters this week to conclude a conditional deal with team founders Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson.
In a statement on his personal website, Lopez indicated that he was close to finding the rest of the funding required to become the team's first confirmed driver.
